The Root Cause of America’s Decline: Government Unions

As an Englishman who immigrated to the United States, I have often wondered how the greatest nation in human history has ended up on the fast track to national decline. My home country of Great Britain was once a global power, but today it is a shell of its former self. The same trajectory seems to be happening here in America, as we race towards socialism and everything that entails – autocratic government, fiscal and moral bankruptcy, and national decline. The root cause, once again, is government unions.

Government unions have rigged the game in their favor, giving themselves lifetime employment at a ruinous cost while delivering less and less every year to the citizens they supposedly serve. They have become so greedy and unaccountable that the system itself is on the brink of collapse. Every year, they steal over a thousand dollars from individual public employees. And they have even resorted to forging signatures on union membership cards.

The Freedom Foundation is pursuing 15 forgery cases against government unions. One of those cases involves Kristy Jimenez, a caregiver in Washington state who takes care of her son battling cancer. Despite never signing up with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Kristy was forced to pay dues because of state laws forcibly unionizing care providers. In 2020, she signed an opt-out form and stopped paying union dues, but the SEIU refused her request, claiming the opt-out window had closed. The Freedom Foundation discovered that Kristy’s signature had been forged electronically in Seattle.

The SEIU’s behavior is akin to that of a desperate mobster, and judges need to consider these fraudsters in the context of organized crime. Kristy’s case is not unique, and the incidents of forgery are adding up. The unions are getting desperate, and their reckless reign of fiscal terror cannot continue. America cannot survive much longer with government unions having more control of government than voters and taxpayers do.

Ending the undue influence of government unions is the most important thing we can do to restore the basic functioning of government in our country before it’s too late. As someone who came to America legally from another country, I see opportunities that native-born citizens take for granted. But I can’t help but see echoes of my native Great Britain here in the United States. We must act now to prevent the same decline from happening here.
